After a user resets a password, I want to force the user to change the password before she gets access to secured content. This is usually done with a servlet filter. But with Spring MVC, you can also use a HandlerInterceptor . According to Spring JavaDoc: HandlerInterceptor is basically similar to a Servlet 2.3 Filter, but in contrast to the latter it just allows custom pre-processing with the option of prohibiting the execution of the handler itself, and custom post-processing. Filters are more powerful, for example they allow for exchanging the request and response objects that are handed down the chain. Note that a filter gets configured in web.xml, a HandlerInterceptor in the application context. As a basic guideline, fine-grained handler-related preprocessing tasks are candidates...

The Android unit test framework is based on JUnit 3 , not JUnit 4. Test cases have to extend junit.framework.TestCase or a subclass (such as android.test.InstrumentationTestCase ). Tests are identified by public methods whose name starts with test , not methods annotated with @Test (as in JUnit 4). An Android test suite is packaged as an APK, just like the application being tested. To create a test package, first you need to identify the application package it is testing. Google suggests to put the test package source in a directory named tests/ alongside the src/ directory of the main application. At runtime, Android instrumentation loads both the test package and the application under test into the same process. Therefore, the tests can invoke methods on...

The String.format() method provides versatile formatting capabilities. This tutorial tries to present these capabilities in a accessible manner. The format string A format string can contain zero, one, or more format specifiers . The general form of a format specifier is: %[argument_index$] [flags] [width] [.precision]co... where things in square brackets are optional, and conversion is a character indicating the conversion to be applied to the corresponding variable value. The only required characters in the format specifier is the percent sign % and the conversion character. A simple example: public static void simpleFormat() { System.out... The Argument index The argument index is specified by a number, terminated by the dollar sign $ . The same argument may be repeated multiple times in a format string. Unindexed...

If CSS3 border-image is properly supported, making a rounded corner box is very easy. You just need a round corner image like this: The following markup: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" ... would render like this (try it in Firefox 3.5 and Google Chrome): However, IE as of version 8.0 does not support border-image . So until border-image is reliably supported in all major browsers, we still have to rely on tried and true tricks to make it work. In general, I found three general categories of tricks to make rounded corners: Good old tables. This trick creates a table of 9 cells and uses the 8 cells on the perimeter to render the borders and rounded corners. The central cell is used for...

cURL is a command line tool for transferring files with URL syntax. The main purpose and use for cURL is to automate unattended file transfers or sequences of operations. It's really easy to see HTTP headers with curl: C:\>curl --head http://www.google.com HTTP/1.0 ... or, headers and page together (dump headers to stdout): $ curl --dump-header - http://www.google.com HTTP/... Test Output By default, only Java beans can be serialized using XMLEncoder . Exception occurs when you try to deserialize an object which is not a Java bean. Errors actually occur when you try to serialize, but they are ignored. As a result, an XML file is generated by the serialization but the file is useless! In my opinion, the version without body content is pretty much useless (the <c:set> tag is a lot more meaningful for this purpose). If body content exists, it is inserted into the page if the testCondition is true . Optional attributes var and scope may be specified. If var is specified, a variable whose name is the value of var is exported to the associated scope ( pageScope if no scope is specified). The type of the exported variable is Boolean and its value is the value of the testCondition . <c:choose>, <c:when>, <c:otherwise> These tags imitate the Java control structure if...else...
